How to find or create the mod folder

First thing is that you won't "find" a mod folder you have to "create" a new folder and name it "mods" -- as a folder name -- within the Defcon game folder.  It is super simple.  Right click your mouse select add new folder.  Like creating a new picture folder in your "pictures" directory named "pictures of cats" and or "meme's or me losing at Defcon online."  And or "cat memes you unironically associate with."

STEP 1:
Go to the C hard drive on your windows computer and
double click that, -- image above shows it all, click that, also the STEPS here that follow. --

STEP 2:
Then go to the Programs Files folder or Program Files (x86) whichever you installed the game into and

STEP 3
Click the Defcon folder,

STEP 4
Then make a folder called Mods and

place the unzipped mods in that folder.  Unzipped mod and or unzipping a mod just means they don't have a zipper image on the folder.  You want plain old yellow looking folders like everything else on your computer.

It is either extract them to your computer some place and then drag and drop the folder into the mod folder or extract them directly into the mod folder.  in your C drive in the program files in the Defcon folder in the new folder you made and named mods.

Here is the important part that can make the mods not launch if you place the mods incorrectly. Each mod lives in its own folder within the mod folder you can't just have 50 different planes in a single folder in the mod folder each is in its own folder with its own title in the mod folder.  Download the planes mod and extract it and take a look inside you'll see [ link ] each is its own folder and when you go to the mod menu in-game they will all display individually in a list format to be selected and activated.  The issue here is you dump all mods into a B-52 bomber mod folder and now you don't why nothing works except the B-52 mod.  Or you didn't extract.

Sidenote: In the highly unlikely scenario the game freezes up on you; exit the game and remove the mod you were running from the mods folder.  It happened to me with one map mod that wasn't made right and when I was making mods the game refused to launch until I removed the mod after running it once.  Every mod on this site will be fine though except the "GeoPolitics" map mod I never got that one to run.  [ link ]

STEP 5:
Finally, be sure when you click to use a mod from the mod menu in the lower portion of the game menu bar that you also click "activate" the mod in the lower corner to use it. You can swap before a game and during if it is graphics but maps only before.

It's very simple overall like downloading a picture off the internet it ends up in your pictures folder right.
Grab that picture and drop it into the mod folder but substitute picture with extracted mod folder and or extract it into the mod folder. Either works.  You can delete any mod or take the image into a graphics editor like photoshop or gimp or even MS Paint and modify the look then save it and put it in that folder with the same name.  Its a BMP file format but you can try to save with jpeg or png I forget if it works or not with those formats.  The trick is if you want to you use a picture of a beer can as a plane the background image will be the plane_blur mod image in that folder already or the default game plane.  The thing to do is name the original mod plane "bomber_1" as you do this and then you can keep it in the folder doesn't matter the game will only read whatever image is named "bomber" or "fighter."

POTENTIAL ISSUE(S)?
It is possible but unlikely that you have an ancient version of the game like a CD version you install from the CD disc and need to update the game to add the mod directory to your game menu toolbar which you will know if the bottom of the game toolbar screen shows the mods option or not.

It was a very early on update to the game like update patch version 2 that the mod menu was added, anyway, that update option it is/was located in the menu somewhere and or if you try to go online it will prompt you to update to play the most up to date version so others can play with you, else you were stuck playing those with the old version, and you can look around to see what version you are running, not sure if servers still offer the update though.

I may have a copy and I will post it here to this website if I can find it.  Be the most recent post top left if I do it will be before this post.  I already said to do that in the To Do post.

The second issue:
You must have a map mod installed to play with someone else using that map mod.  Meaning your friend needs to also install the "africa" map mod [ link ] so that both of you can play together but running a simple bomber or fighter graphics mod then I don't think they also need that pretty sure it just looks different for you with the simple graphics mods and maps are like that.

MY YOUTUBE Defcon videos

There are tutorials and then they're mostly using the "Deterrence Mod" which I don't recommend.  It adds some satellites for radar coverage but everything fires off instantly and quickly which breaks the game.  It is also a "hacked" and or patched version of the game meaning you can't just put it in the mods folder like everything else.  You have to replace the game and then change all the map mods text documents if you want them to display text correctly running a version of the game with updated units in the text document of the game makes the game want to have those lines to read and the old map mods text documents don't have those units and or lines of text and so everything just has long broken text dialogues until you add those 6 or so units in at a couple places plus there is another few things to add as well in those text documents.  Have not posted them all here yet though.
